You may find areas that are very dark in relation to the rest of a photo — especially if it’s an old photograph. Dodging is one way to make these dark areas match the rest of the photo. Dodging is also used to lighten some of the background so that a chosen element will appear more subdued. With careful application, you can wash out the background without destroying the detail.
These tools can also be used to age photos by burning cracks into the image or dodging (darkening) areas such as those you see in old damaged photographs.
